Officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force are actively investigating a brazen incident that unfolded when officers responded to a shooting report.

Head of Crime, Safeguarding, Public Protection and Intelligence Superintendent Dean Holden  said, “At about 10.30 pm on Friday, May 10th, 2024, officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos  Islands Police Force were conducting patrols along Reece Street, Five Cays, Providenciales,  when unknown persons began shooting at them.”

As a result, Superintendent Holden said, “Additional officers responded to the location and began to search for the shooters but were unsuccessful. Officers were departing the scene when they heard sounds of several gunshots coming from the direction where the assailants fled on foot.

“Officers gave a second chase but were unable to apprehend the shooters. About five minutes after departing the scene, officers received a report that a male with gunshot wounds was in an area called The Wells in Five Cays.

“Upon arriving at this location, officers saw a male lying on the ground. As officers attempted to transport the victim, gunshots were again heard, resulting in a police vehicle sustaining damage.  Thankfully, none of our officers or bystanders were injured.”

The 24-year-old victim was transported to a medical facility for treatment. Additionally, officers have arrested a 20-year-old male in connection with the shootings.

“Despite the risk and challenges, our officers remained vigilant. They pursued the shooters, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to apprehend those who threaten the safety of our citizens. This incident highlights the grave danger our officers face daily in their efforts to maintain law and order. We condemn such brazen attacks on our officers and the community they serve.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice and ensure the safety and security of our islands. Together, with the support of our community, we will overcome  these challenges and build a safer future for all.”
